the incredibly short story of the pink bike helmut and the orange peel

once upon a time, i stumbled across this pink bike helmut and orange peel scrap on webster street in oakland’s china town. it was a hazy, slightly rainy day. i wondered why the helmet was there and hoped everyone was ok. i took this photo and went about my day, happy to have witnessed something so strange yet ordinary. the end. pink bike helmut

  1. Have you ever wondered if some of those items were intentionally placed to be discovered? Following up on my comment from a few seconds ago (the picture of the sleeping man) and the idea that everything is to be social-ized, I’m remembering book-sharing (open or hidden, where you place a book somewhere for someone to pick up), couch-sharing,..etc. Laying objects in the open for others to take. And blogs are about laying memories in the open for others to feel.

    • I do wonder that often. I wonder if someone abandons the item and watches from a hidden place as people respond, or don’t respond. Like a social experiment. Or perhaps its an artist who leaves the item and doesn’t concern herself with what happens next, the art is just in the leaving of the object and moving on. Last year I found an artist who does do something just like that. Creates objects that look identical to the types of garbage we see on the streets. His art practice is making the object and leaving it and then photographing it. I’ll try to find the article to share with you. I wonder if you would consider this “art” or not.

I love the analogy that blogs are about laying memories in the open for others to feel. That’s really beautiful and resonates completely.

      Thanks for writing, Pierrot.
